Victoria Cross
/vɪktɔriə ˈkrɒs/ (say viktawreeuh 'kros)

noun
1. the highest bravery award in the imperial honours system, the decoration being in the shape of a bronze Maltese cross, awarded to members of the armed services for acts of conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy, founded by Queen Victoria in 1856. Abbrev.: VC
2. Victoria Cross for Australia, an award with the same ranking as the Victoria Cross, created within the Australian honours system in 1991 to replace the imperial award. Abbrev.: VC
The Victoria Cross was introduced by Queen Victoria to honour acts of outstanding bravery during the Crimean War. The award, in bronze, consists of a bar decorated with laurel leaves and bearing a ‘V’ from which the cross hangs, the cross having a crown and lion superimposed and bearing the inscription ‘For Valour’. The imperial Victoria Cross has been awarded to 96 Australians, including 64 for action in World War I, 20 in World War II and 4 in Vietnam. The Victoria Cross for Australia, of identical design to the original, has been awarded to several soldiers for action in Afghanistan.
